THE TALE OF NINE WINDS

Once upon a time (not very long ago) there were just two winds.

One was called Morris, the other was called Boris.

Both of them thought they were the mightiest winds the world had ever known.

And, in a way, they were.

They both tried to control the sky and everything under it.

They huffed and they puffed and threatened to blow down everything that got in their way or that the planet’s ordinary folk wished to build unless they first asked for permission to do so from one of the winds.

“Do what I say or I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow you away!” the two winds gleefully sang.

Then, one day, a third threatening wind roared into life.

Its name was Horace and he spoke with an English accent.

But his song was the same: “Do what I say or I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow you away!”.

The winds blew hot and cold and caused terror wherever they went.

“At least we only have three winds to contend with!

Let’s all pray no more come….” the terrified people whispered.

But sadly, before very long, a fourth violent wind arose from the north. Its name was Doris. It had a strong French accent – and it threatened to destroy everything in its path if it wasn’t fully respected……

Almost overnight Morris and Boris and Horace and Doris started re-organising the sky.

They took charge of what clouds could go where and when and how much rain was allowed to fall and even how it could fall…..

The four winds ruthlessly tried to rule the skies.

This upset many everyday folk who became very fearful of the powers the four winds had taken upon themselves.

But worse was to come because some seemingly ordinary air currents considered themselves more advanced and started expanding into powerful winds themselves.

Soon Morris and Boris and Horace and Doris were joined by Benji, Saneen and Rivaan.

The skies were starting to get crowded with winds, some of which objected to the paths taken by the other winds.

Many of the winds started complaining that the sky was teeming with too many opposing forces.

“We need to find a peaceful solution” cried out Horace.

“Put me in charge then!” demanded Morris.

“I’m bigger than you!” cried Boris.

“I’m more powerful!” replied Morris.

“But….can we trust you?” asked Doris.

None of the winds could convince any of the other winds to stop

threatening to huff and puff and blow everything away.

It was then that they heard another enormous wind arriving.

Its name was Zichen and it arose in the east: beside it was its smaller brother Hwan…….

In rather good English they both whispered “Do what I say or we’ll huff and we’ll puff and we’ll blow you away!”

All the winds took a deep breath and then went silent.

They suddenly realised the sky simply wasn’t big enough for all of them.

It was time to merge together peacefully for the sake of the beautiful planet and the everyday folk living on it………
