Two Challenging Thoughts…..

This week I am sharing two challenging thoughts that may well upset some people but are probably best considered……
The first is that birthday presents are a missed opportunity.
Where and when did the custom arise?
Obviously, the Bible states that “Wise men from the East brought gifts to the infant Jesus”……a way of welcoming him into the world.
But that was at his birth.
They didn’t come back every year to repeat the exercise!
My thought: It would be better to teach young children on their birthday to thank their parents for bringing them up by reversing the process and encouraging children to give their parents – their mother especially – a small gift of thanks for handling all those teething issues, those dirty nappies, those sleepless nights, their birthing and their upbringing……
Reverse the custom and introduce an annual appreciation for parents…..
Secondly, the Bible indicates that Adam and Eve were the first humans in the Garden of Eden.
They had two boys, Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel and was banished to the “Land of Nod” where he met his wife who gave birth to Enoch.
So, in other words the “Garden of Eden” wasn’t the only place inhabited by people. Instead it represented a non-physical state in which the Divine and the human functioned together.
It was this non-physical state created by God that the Bible first mentions.
So the garden of Eden represented the ability of men and women to exist in a state of direct communication with the Divine.
Just like Moses did.
Just like Jesus did.
Just like St Paul did.
Just like St Francis did.
Just like Buddha did.
Just like Lao Tse did.
Just like Guru Nanak did.
Just like Sri Aurobindo did.
Just like Og Mandino did.
Just like Amma does.
Just like the Dalai Lama does.
Just like many holy people did throughout history and still do today……
For the Bible, its foremost and first lesson was: walk and be with God.
Surely it makes sense for humanity to remember, acknowledge and follow that directive.
Do anything contrary and, like Cain, we are by our own behaviour, removed from our natural connection to the Divine Presence…..
